A San Diego Naval surgeon was killed while riding his bicycle to work by an AMR transportation van. The police investigation concluded that it was the bicyclist that was at fault. After considerable investigation, the case went to trial. The jury awarded the family of the bicyclists a verdict of $17.4 million, the highest single death personal injury award in San Diego County history.
