An explosion in Hayward occurred 10 minutes after gas flow had been shut off, according to PG&E.
Alameda County Fire Department Deputy Chief Ryan Nishimoto said during the news conference that fire crews were dispatched at 9:38 a.m. to reports of an explosion and a house fire on the 800 block of Lewelling Boulevard in unincorporated Hayward between Ashland and Shetland. First arriving units found smoke and flames involving multiple structures, prompting a three-alarm response.
Nishimoto confirmed 75 firefighters were dispatched to contain the fire and protect nearby properties, including three damaged structures on two separate lots and a home with moderate damage on an adjacent lot. Roberto Morales said during the news conference. He said approximately 10 homes on each side of the affected area were evacuated as a precaution, and deputies used drones to assist fire crews with an aerial view of the scene.
